Headache and Migraine Options
Migraines and headaches are serious and affect many people in Franklin. If you're not sure if you have had a migraine or not, the chances are you probably have not had one. The pain can be mind numbing, and for many patients it leaves them unable to function. The traditional medical system relies on medication for this issue, but for many patients that's not enough. It's important to find the source of whats causing the problem. Our chiropractic office can help.
There are many symptoms that can occur before a headache or migraine starts. Hallucinations, depression, or irritation are some of the symptoms those with migraines may experience. Often those with migraines will try to avoid any light, have an intolerance to loud noises, experience nausea, and vomiting to name a few.
Headaches and Migraines in Franklin
It has been shown many times that chiropractic care is effective at helping people with migraines. When the spine is aligned and pressure is removed from the nervous system, this will prevent migraine headaches from occurring. While most people know that they should visit the dentist they are not sure that they need to visit the chiropractor. Dentists take care of our teeth which is an important job, but your spine and nervous system control everything in your body.
For over one hundred years chiropractic care has been giving people relief from headaches and migraines. Franklin chiropractors know and understand the nervous system's master role in the body. If the spine moves out of position it can put pressure on the surrounding nerves. This pressure can result in many problems, but it can also result in headaches.
Headaches are one of the top three things we treat at Franklin Family Chiropractic.
The most common types are a migraine, cluster, tension, and post-concussion.
A true migraine headache is hormonal in nature and much more obvious for a woman. The diagnosis of a migraine often leaves a person feeling very frustrated and medicated, but still in pain.
A structural, root cause can often be detected to help eliminate or reduce the frequency and intensity of your migraines.
- sensitivity to light and sound or feeling overstimulated
- sleep disturbances
- having headaches ‘since as long as you can remember’
- having headaches as the result of a trauma
- pain behind the eyes (cluster headaches)
- pain in the back of the head (tension headaches)
- pain in the neck
- dizziness or vertigo
- crying spells
- you are ‘allowed’ to have more than one kind of a headache.
Cluster headaches: Cluster headaches once examined correctly, have a true and obvious structural cause. All the bones of your skull ‘breathe’. They don’t move like an arm. But fit like a puzzle piece with space in between. The key bone of the skull is called the sphenoid bone and it looks like a raccoon mask, fitting neatly in behind the eyes. When one or both sides of this is stuck, this can result in a severe headache behind the eyes. In fact, when you are born, the sucking mechanism helps realign this. So if it did not get back in place properly when you were an infant it could have always been this way. Yes, the neck is usually involved too, but this is a key component in those deathly cluster headaches.
Tension headaches: Look chiropractic can’t take the stressors out of your life, but getting adjusted certainly does reset the body’s sensory response, reduces pain, and therefore can help the perception of stress. It is as simple as when you have a cold, life is harder. If your body is so locked up and out of function from lack of proper movement, the body itself will become a stressor. Breaking up these head, neck, and spinal adhesions allow the body to function the best it can individually. It can only help. Thoughts (stress and negativity), trauma (physical) and toxins (environment, diet) all lead to the body not performing well. A chiropractic adjustment addresses this triad and proper education from Dr. Farris, allows you choices, correction, and encouragement.
Concussion or post-concussive headaches: Look, this hits home for me. I have had 6 that I remember. (That is always a joke to me). Car accidents, sports injury and a couple freak accidents. I understand that after a concussion, you are now changed. What I hear the most is how ‘no one understands because it is not on the outside’. Very true. You can’t help that part. What you need to know is one concussion is the very thing that makes you at risk for more, because it scrambles your brain. Regardless of the cause, I am very versed in treating it with chiropractic and also coping strategies. This type of a headache should Not be overlooked.
Let me tell you about one other very key area in headache resolution. the C1 bone. It is the one right behind your ears and at the base of your skull. It is a highly mobile, very important piece of equipment in you. This bone is why we had to 2/3 of our schooling and why we value a safe exam at Franklin Family Chiropractic.
It is the ‘off switch’ of the body. Meaning, your brain is on all the time, and this first bone (the off switch) regulates it being balanced. If the off switch is stuck, imagine!!! The brain stem sits in the middle of C1. It is vital. It is important. It is a primary player in many things, not the least of which is headaches.
Upper neck and cranial work are a passion of mine. I look forward to assessing and helping your headaches.
So How are Headaches Treated?
The kind of treatment for headaches will depend on what is causing the headaches. Our chiropractors work diligently to find the source of your headaches to help you to overcome them. Each year millions of dollars are spent treating headaches with aspirin and other drugs. While this may help in some cases, it is often not treating the cause of the problem. Chiropractors are able to work at the source of the problem, which can help you prevent the need for headache medications.
Don't suffer with headaches and migraines. At Franklin Family Chiropractic in Franklin our team will help you understand the cause of your condition and the treatment necessary to fix it. Feel free to call and ask any questions that you may have.
